Meline Danielewicz
msd_100@hotmail.com
A chinese-pole born in Britain, Meline read physics at Cambridge and worked
as a suit in the City before her desire to walk barefoot in the park and
flick rubbers at her colleagues overwhelmed her and she accepted her vocation
as a performer. Despite her academic background, her will to work as a
dance-theatre practitioner saw her perform at the Edinburgh Fringe, The
Place, LABAN and Chisenhale and her interests evolve to encompass live
art and installation pieces (working with sonic artist Rachel Oxley, performance
artist Victoria Melody, video artist Mara Castilho and at the ICA with
A2 company) until she encountered circus. Having initially trained aerial
and physical theatre at Circomedia, 2004 saw Meline tour with NoFit State
Circus in their contemporary circus show 'ImMortal' before spending 2005
developing and performing a new aerial-theatre piece with an emerging
company, Ockham's Razor, under the direction of Samuel Journot and devising
more dance-theatre at the Place as part of their Choreodrome initiative
under the direction of Sally Marie. At a modest level in rope, cloudswing
and tightwire, Meline has joined the degree seeking to improve her skills
without becoming too wrapped up in technique for at the heart of her work
remains a curiosity and a longing to juxtapose strong, almost exhausting
and relentless, physicality with the pedestrian, the mundane, the everyday
(which includes speech and even politics in the sometimes strangely silent
world of circus) creating emotive worlds that are just so slightly offset
that they draw an audience closer and beguile them into questioning, ‘What’s
wrong with this picture?’ Thrown in amongst sprightly young comrades,
having taken this rather circuitous route to circus, Meline now finds
herself thinking that she is somewhat - OLDER(!!!) wiser, yet more like
a child - as many a folksy heroin(e) might say...
